I agree with you that it is important for immigrants coming into America to learn how to speak English, but I also agree with Kate's point. I think multilingual Americans should be able to speak the English language, but they should also not have to abandon their native tongue or tongue(s). Why can't America integrate multilingual children into school curriculums to improve the concept of grasping a foreign language at an early age? When you think about it, we are one of the only countries that does not stress foreign language education. Across the continents of Europe and Asia, many children are educated to speak multiple different languages. Some of these languages include English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and more. However, I also think that our school systems should prepare students with the basics of different languages just in case they are opposed with a language barrier. Often the use of different languages presents challenges but solutions to overcome them are available. I agree with your points to discuss because without knowledge of the local language it just creates difficulties that can be avoided.
